Splashing around the pool with the kids was so much fun! Even though the water was barely over my knees, I was thoroughly soaked within thirty seconds of setting foot in the pool, because I seem to be a hit with the 5-, 6- and 7-year-old boy set. Or at least, they love jumping on me and splashing me and ganging up on me with their water pistols. But I fought back! :D When that grew old, it was time for everyone to try to swim between my legs at once, and I nearly toppled over during a 4-kid pileup.

    Now I look blotchy
This afternoon I went back to the Embassy apartment for the last time to sort out what I wanted to keep here, what I wanted to toss, and what I wanted to have put in storage in Canada.

I also said farewell to Buji and Bujiong, because I don't suppose I'll ever be seeing them again, as much as it hurts to think like that. But if I manage to never see G again, then, that's the price I have to pay. I'll always have my Mr. Sillypants and my Ms. Jiong in my heart, after all, and I know they'll be happy and furry no matter where they are. As sort of compensation, I brought Basil* with me, as well as a few other objects that are totally useless but that make me happy, like Christmas lights, my tiny collection of glass, and my tinier collection of Terry Pratchett books.

It's still really painful, to think that I thought G and I would spend our lives together, only to have it end like this. We had to go get our phones sorted out (to cancel the family plan and transfer the contract over to my name and all that jazz) and sitting there side by side at Softbank, having said nothing at all but the necessary to each other for nearly half an hour made me want to scream. I settled for sniffling and wiping a few tears away instead, and wondered what the sales girl thought of my shocking display of emotion at the simple signing of a new phone plan.

On the bright side of things, my thighs are sore from riding a mechanical bull on Sunday, I might be going to Korea and Australia for my Christmas holidays, and I get to splash around in the pool at work with the kids for the next two weeks!

Tabitha is tearing through the apartment as though the hounds of hell were after her, pausing every now and then to sniff at a suspicious piece of paper. She just vaulted up into my closet, scrabbled around in the back, leapt out again, ran to the window, and is now pawing at the screen in the (always) vain hope that I'll let her out so she can see the world.

    * Possibly the world's first gay Carebear, i.e. the pink one with the rainbow who was quite obviously, to my three-year-old mind, totally masculine and a BOY!

    Kind of gross?
Normally, I'm rarely sick. (Just so you know, I am knocking very hard on wood as I type this. It's harder than you may think.) But yesterday, I was sick. Sick as a dog. Do we even say that in English? At any rate, malade comme un chien. Une chienne, perhaps. Sick like a bitch. Heh. :D

Anyway, how sick was I? So sick that being upright for more than fifteen seconds made me feel like I was going to pass out, I was so dizzy. Sick enough that the only things I ate all day were a small bread roll and half a container of plain microwave rice, and I had to force even those down because I had no appetite whatsoever. Sick enough that the only thing my poor brain could absorb was America's Next Top Model, and even that required some napping between episodes. Sick enough that I couldn't even stomach the thought of getting up, getting dressed and crawling over to the store to get some sort of ant-killing product: instead, I just lay miserably on my futon, with barely even the strength to squish the ants coming toward me over the tatami.

Thankfully, it was a 24-hour bug (the sickness, not the ants, unfortunately), so I'm all better today, and more on top of things. I bought ant poison as well as cockroach poison (I'd rather be safe than sorry on that front!) and have just figured out that the reason there are ants all over my KEYBOARD is not because there is in fact an anthill inside, but because the previous owner of said keyboard (that would be G) obviously wasn't too careful about keeping it crumb-free.

    Bloh.

Now I'm trying to lure the ants into the trap with the promise of a TOTALLY HEALTHY VIKING.

I don't think I mentioned it here, but the hotel B1 and I stayed in when we went to Osaka had a breakfast viking*. We laughed, took pictures of the sign and decided that it was a pretty good deal at Y800/person for the opportunity to combine the Japanese, Western and Japanese-Western hybrid breakfast items in new and scary configurations. It must be said, though, that we were very disappointed that the sign did not feature any type of actual person of the Scandinavian variety, with or without horned helmet.

    * Viking = buffet, here. Maybe someone thought smorgasbord was too hard to pronounce but wanted to keep the Scandinavian link?

I just finished watching The L Word and -- and -- and --

    I am heartbroken.

    Shane. SHANE! @#$%#^#&^#$#!!!!

Goddammit, I want to throttle you so badly, you have no idea. More than when you jilted Carmen. More than when you cheated on Paige.

And my heart broke so much for Jody, even though it's about time Bette started figuring stuff out.

    ;_;

And I'm supposed to wait until next year for the next part?!?!?!?

    Dr. Horrible
In case anyone hasn't heard about Joss Whedon's latest musical, starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, and Felicia Day.

    Well... here's the link http://www.drhorrible.com/

I found the first episode fairly amusing. Looking forwards to the next!

More hilarity on The L Word:

(scene: Shane and Alice sit on the counter, eating pot-enriched -- and I mean actual pot, not Prince of Tennis, -- seriously, how awesome would that be?! -- but I'll get to that -- brownies)

Shane: OMG, what if the brownies are gay?! D:
Alice: They're totally fucking each other! :D
(Shane makes the brownies have sex)

Alice and Shane, I love you being high and goofy together. You rock. In fact, what I love the most about this show, besides the hot sex scenes (BETTE AND TINA YOU NEARLY MELTED MY BRAIN!!!), are the girls just hanging around together or embarking on silly escapades, like the Terrible Trio (Bette, Shane and Alice) trespassing and stealing the sign for Bette's lady love. "Go, save yourselves!"

That's also the best part of Prince of Tennis for me: when the boys just hang out and unwittingly end up on "dates" (that episode made me die laughing, again!) or go bowling or eat yakiniku...

And if I've just lumped The L Word with Prince of Tennis, well... Only one of these shows is actually about gay people.

    So they tell us.

    *coughcough*

    :D

I'm still waiting to hear what my brother thought of the Golden Pair's Match of Love (against Jyousei, during which they can't seem to keep their hands off each other), but I think he was just so awed by Atobe's prowess that he took a break from the series after watching Atobe and Tezuka have sublimated sex for three and a half episodes.

And about the "It's a Date!" episode: so An's solution, when she sees that Momo is depressed, is to set him up on a date tennis match with... Kamio. O_O

I mean, it's the obvious thing to do, isn't it? XD

Started watching season 5 of The L Word and may I say that Jenny being Entitled Empress of the World and Max's every appearance feeling like a public service announcement have more than been made up for by:

    a) Bette? So. Damn. Hot. *fans self* Whoever is dressing her this season, I heartily approve.

    b) Charlie's Lesbians! BWAHAHAHAHA! Alice's hair: BWAHAHAHAHA! to the tenth power! Alice, Shane and Helena together are comedy gold. Can't they have their own spin-off in which they look hot, kick ass, and get all the girls? :D

    c) The Truth About Helena's Cellmate. I just about died laughing at the punch line to that scene. XDDDD As a bonus, it was pretty hot. The scene, I mean, not the punch line. But the punch line was awesome.

    d) Tasha's "gays in the military" storyline: for all that it should feel preachy/issue-of-the-week-y, it is really drawing me in, because the gorgeous Rose Rollins is a fine, fine actress. And what's-his-face-closeted-host is right: hello, cheekbones! :D~

Oh, and Shane? I'm kind of sick of you leaving women at the altar (or realtor's, as it were), but damn it, you're smokin'. In the good way. Though you do it the bad way too, and I'm hoping that you try to quit that, even if you give up the rest of your cleanse. Like being chased by two deranged bridesmaids and the mother of the bride was really enough for you to swear off sex. *rolls eyes*

Also, how insulted am I that the character who shares [the second half of] my name, which isn't all that common, is a total doormat who will probably turn out to be a psycho stalker?!

Heh, I just realised that this season there's a character with my name and one with B1's name (again, not a super-common one). All we need is for a homonym of B2's and we're all set!

    Ice cube light
I just went to get myself some ice water in the dark, and as I was snapping the ice cubes out of their tray, I noticed something: they seem to light up as they snap!

I've noticed this in the light, but I assumed it was just because the white of the ice cube tray was showing up better as the ice cracked, but now I'm not so sure, because it was really too dark for that, and the light was only there for a second and then they just looked the same in the dark.

    Does ice produce light?

Anyhow, spent the evening chez Marlene and Andrew, mostly talking, but I had my big camera so I had some fun shooting some photos. Sadly, I forgot my large memory card, so I was shooting tiny little jpegs so I could experiment some.

They're super cute little critters, but also super fast. Next time, I bring the big memory card and shoot while there's more light in the room. :) Still, aren't they adorable? And isn't this a nice break from pictures of people fighting?

Overall, good day. Took fewer photos on account of having to die with a blaster in my hand a few times. Smuggling baking supplies and baby seals is a dangerous profession... Honestly, I think the smugglers should just ad lib. They were way more amusing than the script. ;)

Happier with the photos. Probably won't have to crop every single one this time. Still had light issues, and couldn't use the flash too much to compensate because it slows me down too much between photos, so unless I'm aiming for a specific action shot and know the choreography, I wound up choosing to err on the side of getting more shots. Will probably experiment further if I make it out to another training session, but John's coming in to town next Friday and I'm spending the next two weekends pretty busy with him, so there'll be new photographic challenges instead. ;)

    Here, futon futon futon...
Why is it that the hardest things to shop for are what should be the simplest, most basic items? Jeans, watches, plain black shoes or trousers, bras -- they're all things I hate shopping for because I hardly ever find anything just as I'd like it; it's not the right fabric, it's uncomfortable, it looks cheap, it's too expensive... Topping that list, for me, is wallets, which is why I usually end up using the same (cheap) wallet for years, until it starts coming apart at the seams and I'm rather embarrassed to be seen with it. My current one, for example, is in a pitiful state, threads hanging loose and the fake crocodile skin rubbing off. Since I happened to be in Shinjuku yesterday, I thought, "If I can't find a wallet I like for a reasonable price in Shinjuku during the summer sales, I'll... keep on using this ratty old thing until it falls apart."

Thankfully, I found something nice, something on sale, something metallic green on the outside, purple on the inside and with pink trim. It's kind of painfully me. And while it's not the perfect wallet (as if such a thing existed!), it'll do quite nicely.

Yesterday I also managed to make myself a futon cover, so that I slept on my futon for the first time. I like it! Tabitha also approves, because it means that she can curl up next to my chest so that I can pet her. She also approves of it being folded up by the wall during the day, because it's one more comfortable thing to nap on.

When the end of June rolled around, I thought I should make some mid-year resolutions, or at least revisit the ones I made in January and try to get back on track, specifically regarding writing reviews and posting to my Travelpod. I haven't written any reviews in over two months, so I have a rather long queue of things to write about (25, to be exact) and I think the best way to go about it is to make myself do them all before M-P arrives on the 4th of August. I've written all the titles out on slips of paper and will draw them randomly, except for the ones I want to do reviews in pictures for. Those ones are the Japanese doramas and BL movies, of course, because they always amuse me and inspire snark, and it's much funnier with images. Also in this batch are a "romantic" "comedy" (quotes because it was neither romantic nor comedic) that made me want to claw my eyes out, some very good books, and anime porn.

    Hee. :D

In Which I Nearly Choke On My Yogurt From Laughing Too Hard
During lunch today, the kids were talking about their grandparents, and F told us that her grandpa had died when she was a baby.

"What's died?" M wanted to know.

My coworker, R, looked at me. "Do they have the same concept of heaven in Japanese culture?" she asked me in a whisper, as we both scrambled to find a way to explain death in simple terms to a four-year-old whose mother tongue is not English.

"It means he's no longer with us," R tried.

F, whose family is Christian, clarified, "He's in heaven."

"You mean he went up?" M asked, pointing at the ceiling.

"That's right," I answered, smiling at the thought of F's grandfather hanging around the second floor.

"He died and now he's with Jesus," F added.

M thought about this for a moment, looking intrigued. "And with Santa?"

    *

R and I had a good chuckle over that, and decided that there could be much worse things than finding out that the afterlife is Santa's workshop. It made me wonder, though, whether M (and, by extension, the other kids, and maybe Japanese kids in general) think of Santa as some sort of ghost. As far as I know, there's no real equivalent to Santa Claus (or the Tooth Fairy, or the Easter Bunny) in Japanese culture, but there are so many gods and spirits inhabiting the country that they probably don't need them.
