    Bob Jones University
    In a file related to the Meanies, I perused the web site of Bob Jones University. It is like reading Landover Baptist. I got nothing 'gainst religiously sponsored universities (eg Brigham Young U is, AFAIK, a respectable LDS university), but this is just funny.

    Here's the If-You-Don't-Send-Your-Kids-To-BJU-They-Will-Commit-Suicide-Page: Three College Shipwrecks. You can't make this stuff up! Some of their other special articles worth reading too, including their section on the evility of evolutionism.

    Here's their excuse for their interracial dating controversy in the last Bush campaign:
    Bob Jones University Responds. Their site wasn't working, so I had to glean it off the google cache. When it works, I might fix it again...or I might forget :)

    Hot and sour soup
    Off to shop for ingredients for my favorite hot and sour soup. And I like it HOT. Here's the link to the recipe: Hot and Sour Soup. The site has all sorts of other cool spicy food stuff, including a catalogue of chili peppers with photos. Mmm.

    Meanies Central
    Well, I suppose I should talk about Monday, then. So JS came for a visit and we had scheduled lunch together; he was bringing his Meanie Party (aka Canadian Alliance) friend. At lunch I learned that homeless people should be jailed for being homeless, and that the real reason for the war in Iraq was the freedom of Iraqi people. Oh, and the world should be run from now on by coalitions of the willing, preferably set up by NATO, but doesn't have to be that way as long as the US leads them. And that I hate freedom, since I didn't agree with the war in Iraq. And that the Meanie Party doesn't have a hidden agenda. And that because I don't like the Meanies, I am therefore a lover of Jean Chretien!

    Anyway, my new Meanie friend took me to Meanies central here. It wasn't a large office, but it was well-appointed. For a party that puts "Canadian" in its name, there wasn't a single Canadian flag anywhere, but a large US flag was in one of the front offices. I got a tour and met the cookie-cut-out clean young people who staff Meanies central. I didn't argue with them, because I had been sworn to silence about my commieness before I entered. I would have, apparently, been beaten up by Meanies if I did.

    Large signs saying "I STAND WITH TONY BLAIR" and "I STAND WITH JOSE MARIA AZNAR" were on the wall of their data centre. Not one mentioned George Bush, because the illusion that this was a Coalition had to be maintained and reinforced. Lots of cartoons and posters mocking McKay and Orchard were everywhere--figures, because Orchard really sabotaged Meanie politics when he became Tory kingmaker.

    Everything was painted with a science-fictiony sea blue and green, which are their party colours. Such soothing colours do not go well with their Meanie outlook, nor, I think, do they go with any party. But at least it's a better colour scheme than that hideous turn-off NDP orange. I like the NDP, but the colour scheme sucks!

    Anyway, JS and I left the Meanie at his office, and we went down to see some other attractions around here. Maybe more later.

    I actually got back from the US on Sunday. Pearson is an irritating airport. Too big. But it was easier to get back than to go.

    For my very few readers, sorry I didn't actually keep my promise and write about my trip. There really was no time even to answer emails, and in the evening computer access was poor. I may have pictures once I return the disposable camera for developing.

    Time to get passport photos done for my trip to the US. Unfortunately, I have an incriminating name and face, so my worst fear about this trip is trouble at the airport(s). Let's hope it all works out well. I'll update my LJ more frequently when I'm on the trip, since it may be worth blogging.

    Kristine Smith
    I've been reading some SF by a new and exciting author, Kristine Smith. Her new "idomeni" trilogy (maybe more?) is quite a good first attempt. I read the first two books, "Code of Conduct" and "Rules of Conflict." It's in my favorite "xenoanthropological" vein of SF. I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. Would have gotten a whole extra star if she had put in more encounters with Tsecha's POV. Again, a first attempt, excellent.
